B.C. outlines 72 of the biggest infrastructure projects in Spring Brochure

VICTORIA – Infrastructure BC’s recently released spring Major Infrastructure Projects Brochure outlines 72 of the biggest projects happening across the province and what stages they are in.

The brochure focuses on projects that cost $50 million or more and includes those from the Government of British Columbia and other public sector bodies.

Projects are generally laid out in two different phases: planning and procurement.

It features 25 projects currently without approvals in the planning stage.

Some of the biggest projects in planning include:

  • Improvements to Highway 1 between the 264th Street Interchange and Whatcom Road Interchange, which includes adding 20 kilometres of high-occupancy vehicle lanes heading in both directions on the highway.
  • The recently approved Roberts Bank Terminal2 landmass and wharves components and the infrastructure and operations component. The landmass and wharves work is expected to begin construction in 2027 with procurement starting next year.
  • The second phase of the Burnaby Hospital and BC Cancer Centre project.

Pre-procurement project highlights include:

  • Upgrades to the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant. Procurement is expected to start in Q3 2023 with construction commencing in 2025.
  • The massive $4 billionFraser River Tunnel projectwhich will replace the George Massey tunnel. Procurement is expected to start this summer.
  • The $860 million redevelopment of the Richmond Hospital with procurement projected to begin at some point this year.
