LONDON, ONT. — Multiple investigations are taking place after a floor partially collapsed near the top floor of a London, Ont. highrise construction project.
Emergency crews responded to a call at mid-day Jan. 5 and prepared to rescue workers on the 25th floor of the building at 131 King St.
London Fire Department District Chief Dennis Schiffers commented, “It was a challenge, we had to use the construction elevator to advance to the 19th floor. From there the crews had to walk up to the 25th floor, assess the patients there and then extricate them.”
Reports stated four workers were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The developer of the 26-storey project is York Developments, a London-based property developer. In a statement, York said the mishap was a partial floor collapse during a concrete pour by a concrete formwork subcontractor.
“We are thankful that no serious injuries have been reported and we are now in the process of gathering further information,” stated the release.
York is conducting its investigation with contractor EllisDon.
The Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development is also investigating the incident.
London police, fire and EMS all assisted with the rescue.
