DCN/JOC Year in Review VIDEO: The impact of COVID-19

The story of 2020 across all aspects of society is the massive impact of COVID-19 on how we all live, work and relate to one another.

Canada’s construction industry was one of the first after health care and other frontline sectors to be deemed essential and has responded throughout the year to the changing conditions of the pandemic with modified workflows, increased sanitation, social distancing and more to keep building projects and employing workers during a time of significant economic uncertainty.

As society sheltered in place, both federal and provincial governments worked to stimulate the economy and navigate a radically different reality than we entered into at the beginning of 2020. Among the changes, B.C. Premier John Horgan opted to hold a provincial election, a somewhat controversial decision that resulted in a clear majority for the BC NDP.

While several vaccines are in the opening stages of rollout, it’s projected the majority of Canadians won’t be vaccinated until at least summer 2021. Until then the construction industry and the rest of Canada copes with both the unpredictability and economic aftershocks of a global pandemic.
